Typically, most U.S. college admissions departments require a letter of recommendation from a counselor。In addition, many colleges require students to provide at least one letter of recommendation from a high school instructor。For example, the subject teacher must be an 11th or 12th grade instructor。However, most colleges do not have specific rules about the grade of the teacher. Instead, teachers are advised to write a recommendation letter, explaining the grade of the teacher, the courses taught, and how much they know about the applicant's academic status and personality。

College admissions departments require letters of recommendation from counselors because they can help the admissions officer understand the student's development, education and background, and information about the school he or she attended。

In the application process, admissions officers need to consider a number of admissions factors, including: academic performance, standardized grades, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, application essays, and possible school interviews。Although the recommendation letter is not as high as the academic and standardized scores for admission, a letter of recommendation with truthful and sincere wording and comprehensive understanding of the applicant will far exceed the student's writing and occupy a higher proportion in the admission factors。
